Michele began her quilting journey in 1986 and has been addicted since. Appliqué is ‘her thing’ – especially designing quilts with William Morris as her inspiration. Michele has been teaching quilting for over 20 years and her specialty is in appliqué and design.

The medallion style quilt has a central panel of roses spilling out of an urn.

The Strawberry Thief

This design is influenced by William Morris’ Strawberry Thief design c1883. This creation is far more simplistic, but lends itself to the very popular designs of the Victorian era.

Morris Revisited

Inspiration for this quilt comes from the style associated with the Arts & Crafts movement. The centre panel was inspired by one of William Morris’s partners, John Dearle. One of the floral blocks can be found on an original Morris & Co fabric panel on display in the Art Gallery of South Australia.

Medieval Morris

This row by row quilt was influenced by some of the more ‘gothic’ designs that William Morris produced and includes the adaptation of the ‘Dragon and Peacock’ curtain fabric which can be see in the Art Gallery of South Australia and also for six months of the year in the dining room at Carrick Hill.

My Renaissance

 

The Renaissance Era was the inspiration for this quilt. The centre panel was adapted from a chair in the ‘Chifley Hotel’ in Adelaide. The other blocks come from a variety of sources around the world. The borders are adapted from the renaissance architecture of Italy.

William Morris and Friends

 

This quilt has been inspired by several designers of the Arts & Crafts movement of the late 1800’s. Most designs are adaptationsof wallpaper and textile patterns from this era.

Coffee With William Morris

This quilt includes elements of the ‘Brompton’ design on the mug and of the ‘Rose’ wallpaper from Morris c. 1883. It is recorded that William Morris was influenced by a 16th century Venetian silk and gold brocade when he was designing the "Rose’ wallpaper

This 13-block sampler quilt is set on point and bordered by an ornate design. The blocks are an interpretation of the many flowers and patterns that can be found on some of the wallpapers and cottons designed by Morris & Co

Woven Verdure

 

Inspiration for this appliquéd quilt came from a black and white 2" x 3" photo of a carpet designed by William Morris, Bellflowers.c.1880 and woven by the Wilton Royal Carpet works.
